A community pet reunion station featuring a microchip scanner.

News Summary

The Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter has introduced ‘Reunion Stations,’ providing 24/7 access to microchip scanners in the community to help reunite lost pets with their owners. Eight stations are planned throughout Round Rock, and WCRAS is seeking partnerships to host more. This initiative aims to improve pet recovery and remove barriers faced by families searching for lost animals, complementing other technological tools and programs already in place.

Round Rock – The Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter (WCRAS) has launched an innovative initiative called “Reunion Stations,” designed to enhance the efficiency of reuniting lost pets with their owners. This new program aims to facilitate faster reunions for families by providing accessible microchip scanners around the community.

The Reunion Stations are strategically equipped with microchip scanners that are available to the public 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This allows individuals who find lost pets to check for microchips without the need to visit a veterinarian or animal shelter, which can often be a barrier to quickly locating pets and returning them to their homes.

Misty Valenta, the director of animal services at WCRAS, emphasized the importance of the initiative, sharing that research indicates most lost pets are generally found within two miles of their homes. This fact underlines the urgency of reuniting pets with their families swiftly and without obstacles.

WCRAS has announced plans to install a total of eight Reunion Stations within the Round Rock area, but the ultimate goal is to place at least one station in each zip code within the shelter’s jurisdiction. This ambitious project is part of the shelter’s broader objective to eliminate barriers to pet reunification and ensure that families can quickly recover missing animals.

To support this initiative, WCRAS is actively seeking partner businesses or organizations with accessible outdoor spaces willing to host additional Reunion Stations. Collaboration with local venues will help expand the program’s reach and effectiveness.

In March, WCRAS achieved a remarkable milestone by reuniting a record 97 pets with their owners during a weekend event, prompting the shelter to waive all reunion fees for that period. Such successes highlight the shelter’s dedication to facilitating the return of animals to their families while also enabling the organization to allocate resources and focus on animals in greater need.

Technological Innovations to Aid Pet Recovery

WCRAS has implemented several technological tools in addition to the Reunion Stations. For instance, the Petco Love Lost program allows pet owners to register their pets’ photos in a searchable database, making it easier for individuals to locate lost animals. Furthermore, a new online visual mapping tool displays photographs of lost or found pets in specific areas, enhancing the chances of identification and reunion.

For those who find lost pets, WCRAS operates a “Finder to Foster” program. This initiative offers temporary housing arrangements while providing free vaccinations and microchipping services, prioritizing the well-being of the lost animals and facilitating their eventual reunions with their families.

Resources Available for Pet Owners

Pet owners in the Round Rock area can access various resources to aid in the recovery of lost pets. Information is available on the Petco Love Lost website and the shelter’s dedicated “Lost Pets at the Shelter” page, further supporting families in their search efforts.

For entities interested in collaborating with WCRAS to host additional Reunion Stations, inquiries can be directed to April Peiffer, the shelter’s Community Engagement Coordinator, via email at [email protected]. This initiative represents a significant step forward in WCRAS’s mission to keep pets and families together, ultimately enhancing community well-being and fostering responsible pet ownership.
